It was magical. We got connected on Kayastha Matrimony and within days we grew fond of each other. Long hours, continuous calls, sleepless nights, endless chats, sharing our lives over every app or technology possible (no, we didn't have satellite phones!)- Whatsapp, Google, Facebook, Skype- we just couldn't get enough of each other. I am living in the USA and she is based out of Delhi but the amount of togetherness we gained over a distance of 8,000 miles was nothing short of actually being next to each other. Soon, we were smitten. We realized how we filled each other hearts with pure happiness and love. We fit like the two last missing pieces of a puzzle, completing a panorama of dreams. And then after four absolutely crazy months of getting addicted to each other, the day finally came for my travel to India. Excited as we both were, I was skeptical with all sorts of stupid needless questions popping out of my head- What if she never likes me in person? What if our families don't hit off? What if any of us squabble over a petty disagreement? Well, need I remind you the nuances of an arranged marriage? But one thing was clear though we weren't ready to let go of each other- come what may!
So the families rendezvoused the next day. My parents arrived New Delhi and hers from Agra and we took a trip to Faridabad to meet her family at her brother's place. They say marriages are made in heaven and when that special time comes, the planets and the stars, the universe itself align to make it possible. That is something which happened that day, the scariness and awkwardness of the two families coming together for fixing an alliance in the age-old orthodox way- the formality and reluctance got immediately dissolved by sheer bonhomie and warmth from both the families. There was no arrogance, no hesitation, nothing formal- only excitement, cheerfulness, and honesty. And after two hours of crazy laughs and endless gossips, it was pretty evident that we are hitched for life. And in the days to follow? Well, in the time when people discussed demonetization and cash crunch, our families had only thing to plan and discuss- our marriage! Heck, they fell in love quicker that we did!
Now I am back to the US and into my routine after a life-changing trip to India. The 'Pandits' are still working on finalizing an auspicious date for our nuptials but we, as for like all the couples madly in love, are counting calendars and pushing each heavy day, to get closer to the one written in the stars! As she puts it- "Baby, aren't we are so smart- the way we fooled our families and made them believe our marriage is an arranged one!" Beauty with brains, ain't she? :D
